I Love You Most!

I had an encounter with a young man once who loved Rock and Roll. It was when I was working as a stocker at a grocery store. At the time I generally would sing praise or worship songs as I worked. It seemed like I could see God’s hand working even in the most mundane things. While in the dairy section stocking milk, the young man ran up to me and said, “I want what you have.” I knew he was referring to my relationship with God and the joy God had given me.

But before I think of how to respond, I heard the words coming out of my mouth, “You can’t have what I have.” “Why not?” he asked. I could see the shocked look on his face. The Holy Spirit then spoke to me saying, “To have what you have He has to love God more than anything.” So I told him, “You have to love God more than anything.” (Exodus 20:3) “Even Rock and Roll?” he said perplexed. “Yes, even Rock and Roll.” Then he said, “Well I can’t do that,” and walked away upset. To be honest, at that point I was beginning to wonder: “Was that really God?” It sounded so harsh, even for me.

Time went on and we did not have many conversations after that. I eventually left the job, got married and moved to a different city. Years later my wife and I came back to that city to visit some friends. We decided to stop at a grocery store to pick up some things. To my surprise I saw this young man running towards me in the parking lot. He was yelling, “I got it! I finally got it!” His face was lit up with joy. At first I was kind of taken back. He then began to explain how God started dealing with him about how much he loved Rock and Roll. God had revealed to him how He desires us to love Him more than anything. The young man and his wife shared how they had fully committed to the Lord and He was playing drums in the church. Their lives had been totally changed.

God desires to be our first love. We must love Him more than our spouses, our family, our careers, or any other obtainable thing in this world – even our own lives. (Matthew 10:37; 1 John 2:15) This is how much He loves us! He has given us His all and He desires us to given Him our all. (John 3:16;1 John 4:19;1 John 15:13 ) When we love Him more than anything, we begin to understand things in a new light – His Light. He fills us with His joy and He takes us to places we never imagined possible.

So, “Who is your first love?” I’ve been told that if you look at what you spend your time doing or where you spend money, it is a way to measure what you love. However, I know many who spend a third of their 24-hour day at jobs they despise. Others also sink the bulk of their money to get to jobs which they despise, but work at to support their families. So it is not always a fair measurement. We also find in Revelation it can’t be measured in just what we spend our time and funds on.

[To the angel of the church of Ephesus write] “These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lamp stands: ‘I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lamp stand from its place—unless you repent.'” (Revelation 2:1-7)

So how do we know what our first love is? Simply put, our first love is the person or thing that we are most passionate for. It is what drives us. God desires it to be Him. So I challenge you to examine yourselves (2 Corinthians 3:15) and see if something other than your love for Him is driving you.

He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
