Bump in the Road

Sometimes it seems that as soon as we make progress on a goal or some small feat in life, we hit a speed bump – or worse, a road block. Who Cares?

I spent some time with my mother-in-law in ICU today at the local hospital. Normally, I would have been at church, but I needed to get an update from her doctor and see Sherran so she knows she’s loved and not forgotten. Her youngest son, my husband, has been sick the last 3 days and unable to go see her. Her oldest son lives a few hours away and came to see her during the week. I thanked the doctor for their excellent care, and he mentioned how blessed Sherran is to have so many people who love and care for her, because many patients don’t have that. I said “Really?” while suddenly filled with sadness. Why don’t they have anyone to visit? ...

Got Fruit?

In our backyard is a fig tree that was here when we bought our house. The original homeowners brought the young fig tree here from New Jersey 20 years ago. When we moved in my family was delighted at the prospect of picking fruit out of our own tree. It’s a sprawling tree that the previous owners would cut back in late fall, and by summer it would grow back bigger than the previous year. We decided we wanted to continue picking and sharing the fruit of this tree. This summer, however, we’ve had personal setbacks that have barely left time to mow the grass, let alone pick the fruit on the tree. As I was mowing the grass recently, I felt drawn to ...
